The 5 Stages of AI Mastery (And Why Most People Stall at Stage 2)

There's a pattern in how people actually get good with AI — not the hype version, the real one. It has five stages, and almost everyone you know is stuck at the second. Here's the map, adapted from Sabrina Ramonov's framework, with my own climb as the example.

Stage 1 — Ask

You use AI like a search engine with manners. One question, one answer, copy, paste, done. Everyone starts here, and for quick lookups it's fine. But asking alone caps the value at whatever a single answer is worth.

Stage 2 — Think

You start having conversations. Follow-ups, refinements, "make it shorter," "try another angle." The output gets better — and here's the trap: it gets just good enough to feel like mastery. Most people stall here permanently, generating endless drafts they still have to drag across the finish line themselves.

Stage 3 — Teach

You stop renting the AI's generic knowledge and start training it on yours: your voice, your audience, your examples, your rules. The output stops sounding like everyone else's. This is the stage where AI starts multiplying you instead of replacing a search box.

Stage 4 — Delegate

You hand off whole jobs, not just questions: "run this checklist," "draft the week's posts from these notes," "audit this for unsupported claims." You become the reviewer instead of the typist. Delegation is where hours actually come back.

Stage 5 — Automate

The repeatable parts run on rails: systems that draft, route, remind, and publish while you supervise. Not autopilot income fantasies — supervised systems doing documented work. My Instagram SETUP automation, which sends my free guide to anyone who comments the keyword, is a small, real example.

The honest part

Stalling at Stage 2 isn't a talent problem. It's a sequence problem. People try to automate (Stage 5) before they've taught the AI their voice (Stage 3), or delegate (Stage 4) work they never defined. The stages are stairs. Skip one and you wobble.
